Chapter Twenty

“There’s my boyfriend,” Maria said, pointing at the truck pulling into the parking lot of Dominguez.

Maria looked at Juan Cruz with a sad smile and tears in her eyes. She awkwardly leaned back, gave him a huge hug, and kissed him deeply on his lips.

“I’m going to miss you, sweet Juan,” Maria whispered.

Maria handed Juan Cruz the keys to his taxi. Maria’s boyfriend pulled his truck in the spot next to the taxi. He joined them in the taxi. His name was Diego and he couldn’t speak a lick of English. Maria introduced Courtney and Diego. Diego shook her hand but shared no words. After Diego and Maria had a brief conversation in Spanish with Juan Cruz, they exited the taxi.

“I don’t know how to say this,” Juan Cruz said as he watched Diego’s truck pull out of the Dominguez parking lot.

Diego honked his horn and Courtney waved at the truck.

“Say what?” Courtney asked.

Juan pointed at the dark building. “Dominguez is a club.”

“And?” Courtney asked, genuinely confused.

“I should have told you earlier,” Juan Cruz said.

Told me what?

“I don’t get what you’re saying,” Courtney replied.

“You see, in this club, there are two very different levels. On the first level, it’s a very basic, very common dance club. You know, dancing, techno music, drinking, drugs; this sort of thing. But on the second level, well…” Juan Cruz trailed off.

“Well, what?” Courtney figured she knew what the second floor was but she wanted him to say it.

“The second level is a sex club,” Juan Cruz told.

Courtney’s mouth dropped open in shock. What she thought he was going to say was it was a strip club, not a sex club. Not often was she rendered speechless but this was one of those times.

“The second level is only open one day a year. I have always wanted to climb those spiral stairs but every year, I wuss out. Mainly because I saw my own father go up one year. But with his passing, I no longer have that worry. Tell me what you are thinking?”

The only word Courtney could think was the word shock. This was the type of thing she could imagine Molly getting into, not her. A wild night back home consisted of drinking coffee after five p.m. But wasn’t that person exactly who she was trying to not be like? Courtney opened her purse and pulled out the orange pill bottle.

“What is that?” Juan Cruz asked.

“This is me coming out of my shell!” Courtney said with a luscious smile.
